WHAT A MENTOR SHOULD BRING TO THE TABLE

When you want to run a marathon first time and you need advise how you do it best being in your personal situation, you want to hear from a mentor who wears a 42km finisher t-shirt . Been there, done that. When someone has already gone through the same journey that you are just beginning, it is only natural that their experience will be greater than yours. However, a great mentor provides more than just knowledge; they also provide wisdom. A great mentor will help you to learn from your own mistakes rather than micromanage or tell you exactly what to do. Therefore, a great mentor will spend more time listening to you, understand you and your experiences and and offer guidance towards your own goals, open up for different perspectives on your ideas and facilitate your plans to achieve your targets.

Your mentor must be available when you need help and the problem is fresh. It is the trust built with great rapport and the confidence that the mentor is there when you need him or her to give you a piece of mind.

A Mentor also will

  • pose challenging questions, give constructive and honest feedback
  • offer guidance and empower the mentee to make their own decisions
  • open doors and share relevant professional contacts and resources
  • share their own experiences, best practises and lessons learned
  • show agility to the situation and methods used for the best outcome for all involved

ARE YOU READY FOR A MENTOR?

When we agree on what a mentor should bring to the table, it is a two way partnership, whereby the mentee must be open for mentoring in the first place.

Here we use the research from Carol Dweck about growth mindset to explain that a mentee needs the understanding that it is possible to learn new things, to have choices, and with time and effort, anything can be learned and achieved.

Being a mentee is not just receiving pats on the shoulder, its is to roll up the sleeves and take action. Ultimately the result counts. But we emphasise on smart actions with agile and hybrid methods to implement small daily increments and compound achievements over weeks and months.

As a mentee

  • You must be willing to look inside yourself. Every change starts with yourself.
  • Self-awareness and willingness to see the blind spots is a critical stepping stone to move forward.
  • Honesty and telling all the facts are the foundation to build a monument.
  • you must be prepared for the mentoring sessions
  • ask for – and implement – feedback
  • be respectful of the mentor’s time as this is a reflection of your own value of time
